With 2018 slowly drawing to a close, it’s time to ponder what delicious delights are going to be on offer in 2019. What wedding cake trends are going to blow our minds in the coming months?
One style that has massively grown in popularity this year has been the hand painted cake, and it’s showing no signs of slowing down whatsoever. This is not the forte of every cake maker, but there are some who specialise in this style and with good reason. Whether you have a floral design or hand painted images of the bride and groom’s journey together, your cake will be the perfect blank canvas for an edible artisan to go to work on.
Another major trend throughout the last couple of years has been the naked cake. These are now slowly starting to morph more towards ‘semi-naked’ or ‘half dressed’ cakes. Not everyone is a fan of sugarpaste, so or those who don’t particularly like lots of icing, these cakes are fantastic as they provide all the flavour using just buttercream alone.
Drip cakes are going to stay with us into 2019 too. They have a relaxed style while still being absolutely chic. The drips can be made using icing, glaze, ganache or chocolate, which has been poured over the top of the cake so that it drips only part way down the sides. Then the top can be decorated with anything you like, such as flowers, macarons etc. Why not even combine two styles and have a semi-naked drip cake. I see big things for them. You heard it here first!
Sticking with the ‘naked’ theme, a brand new trend is for naked letter cakes. Remember those birthday cakes which denote your age in cake? Well, the very latest thing in the wedding industry is to have the initials of the couple made from cake. The tops can then be decorated with piped buttercream, macarons, sweets and fresh fruit and flowers.
